The internet can’t stop talking about Victoria Beckham’s new skincare line. It is the skincare solution that everyone is been waiting for. The first product that was born out of her brand is a ‘moisturizer-primer hybrid’. This product came to life as a result of a collaboration between Victoria and Professor Augustinus Bader. Prof. Bader is a German stem-cell scientist who was behind one of the most popular skincare products of 2019: The Cream. Together they came up with the ‘Cell Rejuvenating Priming Moisturiser’ which claims to have “powerful, clean ingredients.” So, you can imagine this being a perfect match between science and skincare.

One question remains: is this product as good for the environment as it claims to be for your skin?
Unfortunately, the answer is no! We took the liberty of checking the ingredients of this magical skincare product and it is not free of microplastics.
The formula for this hybrid contains not one but three of the Red List microplastic ingredients: Sodium Acrylates Copolymer, Sodium Polyacrylate, and Carbomer. What more? This formula also contains one of the Orange List “sceptical microplastic” ingredients: Polysorbate-80.
Growing health implications related to microplastics
It can be easily concluded that this product is no miracle for the environment but it might not be a savior for your health either. Micro- and nano-plastics are increasingly proving to be a risk to our health. The smaller the size of these plastics, the more potential they have to affect us. If these tiny plastics manage to find a way into our body, they are capable of potentially being absorbed by our portal veins, may have access to our organs and transfer through our blood-brain and placental barriers.
We need a deeper understanding of the effect of microplastics on our health and the many ways of exposure. But there is enough scientific evidence for us to know that we better avoid microplastic ingredients, for the good of the planet and for the good of our health.
