Glitter without litter: is that for real?

The biggest and the saddest shock of the plastic awareness hype was about GLITTER! Everyone loves glitter, since we were little kids. If you continue to think that “a little glitter never hurt nobody”, well then think again! Why? Because glitter is usually made of plastic sheets, eventually shredded into tiny glitter particles which are used in a wide variety of products, including makeup and cosmetics.

Why is that a problem?

These microplastic sparkles flow straight from your bathroom drain or sink into the sewer system. Wastewater treatment plants are not designed to filter them out and that’s how they end up in our natural waters contributing to the ‘Plastic Soup’ swirling around in our oceans.

What happens then? Sea animals absorb or eat microplastics; these particles can be passed along the marine food chain. Since we are ultimately at the top of this food chain, it is likely that we also ingest microplastics.

Microplastics are not biodegradable and once they enter the environment, they are nearly impossible to remove!

Are we ingesting glitter?

We might be ingesting glitter by accident while using them. What happens when it enters our bodies? That question is still out there for speculation. What we do know is that the additives in plastics can potentially make us sick. These chemicals are known endocrine disruptors and may cause certain hormone-related cancers.

Is there a plastic-free way to glitter?

The non-fat balm base of this glitter is made with castor oil, carnauba wax and vegetable glycerin, among others. The glitter itself comes from the mineral mica, fluorophlogopite, titanium dioxide and tin oxide. What then? Let your lips and skin shine!
