It’s that time of the year again. Sales are coming in from all directions, product after product and item after item being sold at the lowest possible prices. Products that have an environmental and human rights cost attached to them, which is way more costly than we give them credit for. Perhaps, this is one of the reasons why #GivingTuesday holds such a global relevance today. It usually falls on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving, this year it’s on the 1st of December. This movement started in 2012 with a simple goal: “a day that encourages people to do good.” It inspires people around the world to give, collaborate, and celebrate generosity.
GivingTuesday.org reported that $511 million was given online within 24 hours in the US alone. The first edition of the Dutch #GivingTuesday was in 2019 and according to GivingTuesday.nl, an amount of 307,299 € was raised through different crowdfunding and donation platforms alone. These figures show how much we are willing to come together and support the causes and people in need. This year such support is even more important for countless local businesses, communities and organisations.
How can you participate in #GivingTuesday?
Becoming a part of this global movement is fairly easy: Give! Giving in whatever capacity you are able to is central to this day, whether through giving your talents or giving your time. You can also give to our cause in multiple ways:
Give Your Voice
Recommend the Beat the Microbead app to at least one friend or family member and talk to them about why you are passionate about this topic. Maybe your passion will activate the ones around you. You can also give us a shout out on social media showing your support for our cause.
Give Your Time
You can volunteer for our cause. Every time you add a product to our database, you help us build a case against microplastics. With every product information, we can create evidence and convince authorities about the extensive use of plastic ingredients. A bit of extra effort on your side makes you a part of the fight against microplastics in cosmetics and care products. So, go ahead, scan the barcode of your product and help us get some more information!
Give Your Donation
As a non-profit organisation, we always rely on donations and funding in order to function and keep fighting for what we believe in: no microplastics in our care products! We are running a crowdfunding campaign until the end of this year, so we can make the app better and get more hands to process all the product information that people send us.

All you need to do is choose a day from above and if you decide to donate (min. 5 euros) to our crowdfunding on that day, the brand associated with it will donate their product to one person chosen by us.
At the end of the day, #GivingTuesday is just another occasion where we show appreciation towards people, businesses and organisations that are doing the best for the environment and our planet. Let’s give what we can and celebrate our solidarity towards the same goal: a world free of microplastic pollution!
